About The Data Stack Diaries
A while ago, I was lucky enough to join a company as their Data & Reporting Manager. The remit for the role was simple - to update there existing data environment so it could be used for effective, company wide, reporting. This it turned out, was not as easy as you might think, so blog is about how I went about doing this including all the highs, the lows, and the reasons why
About Me
I'm 60 something and I live in the UK. I've been working in IT for nearly 40 years, and have been working with data for well over a decade now in various roles.
The Logo

The main logo is a stack of four layers, each layer is a different colour to represent a different layer in the modern data stack. From top to bottom, these are
- Gold Layer - this represents the Data Use layer
- Red Layer - this represents the Data Transformation layer
- Blue Layer - this represents the Data Storage layer
- Green Layer - this represents the Data Ingestion layer
... but more on this later 😊
The long form of the logo has a representation of a diary on the left hand side, with the stack logo on one of the pages, and then the words "The Data Stack Diaries" to the right.
The logo was build using an icon from the Noun Project called Layers by Andi Our Abdillah. The long form uses a font called Timeout which I purchased from MyFonts.
Use of AI in this Blog
So in these days of rampant AI, lets talk about the elephant 🐘 in the room - how much of this blog is created by AI, and am I actually a real person?
AI is only used to create images in this blog, it isn't used to do any of the writing as the writing is one of the big parts I enjoy. And you can probably tell this from quirky style of the writing and the slightly offbeat sense of humour that appears from time to time.
Hopefully that will also help to convince you, that yes, I am human 😊
Subscriptions
If you find the information here useful and you'd like to see more, you can sign up for a subscription. Don't worry, it doesn't cost anything and you'll get notified when new content is posted and a periodic newsletter. How periodic probably depends on how much is going on, and how much new content I have created recently. Based on previous experience I'd suspect it'll be every 2 to 4 weeks. There definitely won't be any mailbox spamming 😊
In the future I may introduce a paid subscription tier for premium content or courses.
